Perhaps Yamaha believes in under promise and over deliver? MCN also measured 91 on a 12, not the 85 that somebody, somewhere claimed Other USA mags have shown readings of 95 and 97 on 14's. In the meantime, I am very, very happy that I upgraded to the 14.Ĭlick to expand. Having said all that, if I get a chance for a back to back ride on a flashed 14 and mine, I would welcome that opportunity to evaluate the difference. I should clarify that my "standard" 14 has had an Akra can on it since before it was first started, the same can that I had on my 12. I believe that I can feel that increase after riding 34,000 miles on my flashed 12 and now 12,000 on my standard 14. Their runs showed a 8.5 HP increase over their runs on a 12 model, getting 99.5 at the wheel. A rider from the UK posted the throttle maps of the 14 on the yst forum and it showed that while there are still some restrictions in the lower gears, they are not as bad as on the previous models.Ī recent issue of Motorcycle Consumer News where they were doing a comparo between the 14 ES and the new V Strom 1000 included dyno runs. My butt dyno tests include 2nd gear throttle wheelies and my 14 does them better than my flashed 12. My stock 14 seems to run very well and has a very good midrange pull. Would it help? Probably a bit, but I don't think it will be as a dramatic a change as with the 12 and 13 bikes. Now I am in S mode just about all the time and have no problem with that.Īs far as the 14 "needing" a flash, in my opinion, no it doesn't "need" it. Since then either the S mode initial throttle has softened a bit or my right hand became used to it or more probably, a combination of the 2. For my first trip riding my favorite Ozark twisties, I did most of that in T mode and was happy. I now have 12,000 miles on my 14 and when I first got it, I thought it had an abrupt on off throttle in S mode. I had a 12 and had the EC Unlimited gen 2 flash which really woke it up and I would recommend that or Anthony's flash for any 12 or 13 owner. Seems every time I get far enough ahead on the money front, some crap puts me right back to square one or even behind the ball. I will be getting mine done but I want to wait till I get a set of the Arrow headers as I've heard the headers combined with a tune will get you close to 8-10hp. Not saying every 14 is like mine but mine definatly has some minor issues. I've checked for exhaust leaks and it's fine. It has done all that since I bought it new. I also think "T" mode is too sedate, especially tip-in to say 1/2 throttle. Mine will also go dead returning to idle and occasionally, go dead while idling. It goes soft and at times causes or nearly causes a stall. IMO, the initial tip in while in "S" mode is very abrupt at times, at other times it seems as if something is happening just as you are letting out the clutch. The tune will get rid of the factory set restrictions in the lower gears and the speed limiter I'm told. I have ridden a two stock 13s and my 14 and I think my 14 "needs" it. Some people say that Yamaha worked a bit on the tuning of the 14 models.
